Aromatherapy & Menopause

Menopause is the natural cessation of a woman’s fertility. It occurs between the ages of 45 to 55, however it can happen earlier or later. Normally estrogen levels fall to 40-60% of premenopausal level and progesterone levels fall to almost zero. Previously women could not wait to menopause to get away from their monthly periods, however, nowadays many women dread it, as there are other factors that arise when women go into perimenopause and finally menopause.

Menopausal depression is thought to be one of the main symptoms that women seek help like taking Hormone Replacement Therapy and more. Older women are concerned about osteoporosis while younger women worry about hot flashes. One in two thirds of women discontinue HRT because of weight gain and unwanted side effects and with so many studies of it being linked to breast cancer, it is not advisable to continue with that approach today.

The transition into menopause, known as perimenopause (can start from age 30+ onwards), usually precedes the actual menopause. During this early-stage women will experience, hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal changes, changes in menstruation, sleep disturbances, loss of energy, night sweats and as they get closer to the actual menopause (which would be counted with an absence of a period for at least 12 months), they develop depression, loss of concentration. vaginal dryness, changes in sexual function and so much more. These are all caused by hormonal fluctuations and intensify from woman to woman.

Aromatherapy has been used successfully in the treatment of the above issues and is a truly holistic therapy considering the mind body and spirit of the person seeking help. Essential oils are extracted from certain medicinal plants and have a positive effect on our body as we absorb the goodness the plant has to offer.

Some powerful essential oils to consider during these stages are Rosa damascena (Rose), Cupressus sempivirens (Cyress) Salvia sclarea (Clary sage). For estrogen support essential oils of Foeniculum vulgare (Sweet fennel), Salvia officinalis (Sage), Pelargonium graveolens (Geranium) can help. There are many powerful essential oils when formulated together can support many of the symptoms that arise from Menopause, like hot flashes, night sweats, water retention and bloating, circulatory issues and so much more. In my career of 27 years, we have supported many women going through these symptoms with grace and patience.
